Additional Projects
Following is a list of potential projects that can be used to infuse a visually obvious terra cotta design presence into our community. This will speak of our unique ceramic heritage to all who enter Alfred, and enable us to introduce them to our world class ceramic and glass technology and ceramic art:
- Terra cotta (T-C) sculptures randomly placed around the village (created by students or whoever). This would be a good use for salvaged roof tiles that have been saved at various locations in the area.
- T-C birds – around the community – in trees, on fences, in lawns, on porches and roofs.
- T-C walls – walls and fences covered or capped with a tile veneer.
- T-C decorative inset tiles – inset into wood surfaces such as posts and beams.
- T-C cladding – Posts and Beams on any structure can be covered with a T-C “shell”.
- Annual limited edition T-C tiles – designed, produced, and sold each year as a fundraiser.
- A T-C clock – a large village clock.
- T-C entry arches or columns over or beside the roads that enter Alfred, marking entry into T-C town.
- T-C planters around the Village and Town – can be many designs and sizes.
- Rest spots randomly located in the area with T-C benches and T-C tile roof shelters.
- *The Village bandstand and corner gazebo – upgrade and trim out with T-C in many ways..
- *T-C house numbers – can be placed on every house.
- T-C trim and caps on road bridges.
- There can be 3 or 4 short creek bank trails that are T-C paved and trimmed..
- A Village entry sidewalk trail can be T-C marked and trimmed..
- A T-C village fountain.
- A T-C canopy on the business block, to replace the awnings.
- T-C trims added to the AU and ASC signs.
- T-C themed murals, depicting T-C history and production.
- Lighting – T-C cladding added to lamp poles and light fixtures.
- T-C borders can be installed along walks and around gardens and lawns.
- T-C street signs can be designed and constructed.
- T-C historical signs and building markers.
- T-C sidewalk pavers can replace the crumbling concrete pavers.
- A T-C art, visitor center, and small museum – make your own tile, throw a pot, and learn T-C history.
- Construct a giant T-C turtle (Terra the turtle?) Her shell can be T-C tiles. This will be the visitor photo op.
- Have a T-C turtle mascot, a terrapin – She could be coordinated with the giant turtle, “Terra”.
- T-C sidewalk waste receptacles.
- A T-C maze or labyrinth.
- T-C tiles salvaged from roof replacements can be used by residents for whatever projects they can imagine.
- A T-C Sundial
- T-C roadside “posts” located on area roads, pointing to Alfred.
- T-C signs that say “Smile you’re in Terra Cotta Land”.
- T-C business signs
- T-C mileage to other places signs.
- Memory tiles – Graduating students can select and engrave their name and class year on a special T-C tile, to commemorate their class year. This can also be done for alumni from past years.
Possible applications for terra cotta design are unlimited. We know of no other community that is using terra cotta in this way, or has the abilities we have to do it. We have resources through the schools in our valley that can help with marketing, design, architecture, production, construction, sculpture and art. Everyone can be involved in this project, and it will help students connect with our community. It will be an emphatic statement that Alfred is “Outside of Ordinary”, and the world center for ceramics.
Any / all additional ideas are welcome. Please email them to alfredny21cg@gmail.com. Thank you.
