In addition to a dynamic career in public relations, marketing and brand management, Mark Danes has been deeply involved in economic development and destination marketing for more than twenty years. He has served as tourism commissioner for the state of Virginia, where he built a regional brand for the Eastern Shore of Virginia, themed, ESVA “You’ll Love Our Nature.” He also served on the industrial development board of Cape Charles, Virginia and Charleston, South Carolina, the latter of which was responsible for attracting corporations such as Boeing, Bosch and SPAWAR, as well as helping build a new brand for Seabrook Island. He has also been active implementing community development programs with Rotary clubs in Virginia, South Carolina, North Dakota, Iowa and New York.
During his corporate and higher education work his clients have included IBM, American Express, Merrill Lynch, Johnson & Johnson, Coca-Cola, TRW, Bank of America, Virginia Beach CVB, Continental Airlines, Atlantic Mutual Insurance and others.
Mark’s work in higher education includes posts as Director of Marketing for The Citadel in Charleston, SC; Associate Vice President for the University of North Dakota; Chief Marketing and Communications Officer for Des Moines University; and, Vice President for Marketing and Communications at Alfred University in Alfred, New York.
He is passionate about creating sustainable brands for regions that generate visibility and traffic that leads to expanded business through tourism marketing efforts. This work involves creating sales and media relations plans that attract grant and venture capital investments in infrastructure, programming and novel attractions.
