Aside from the Terra Cotta Initiative, there are other projects that “happen”, and serve to enhance the beauty and aura of Alfred:
01
Main Street Flowers
For many years the Alfred Twenty First Century Group has sought donations and purchased the planters and flowers for Main Street. The Village of Alfred has provided support of labor and equipment to keep them watered and fertilized. The flowers have been an appreciated and satisfying endeavor.
02
Christmas Decorations
Years ago A21CG purchased the primary Christmas decorations for the Village, the wreaths that clamp on the streetlights and encircle the lamp globes. This is a warm and lovely decoration that has been highly affirmed. The wreaths have now reached an age where they need some rehabilitation. We have researched their condition and construction, and feel that we can rebuild them at a great cost savings for A21CG and the Village. Primarily needed is an improved mounting system and LED light strings to replace the old problematic incandescent bulbs. This is a project for the summer of 2024. Also for Christmas, John Ninos has for years placed attractive Christmas light “trees" on his properties.
03
Community Entrance Signs
Also years ago the Alfred Twenty First Century Group purchased and had installed highway entrance signs for the community. They were placed on the North and South ends of the Village, and in Alfred Station and Tinkertown. Of course, they too have weathered, and this past summer some repair work was contracted for and carried out. Currently, a matching Historic District sign is being designed with the hope of being able to purchase and install it soon. An ongoing challenge is to engage volunteers to maintain the landscaping around the signs, and this has been done for years.
