The history and traditions of Alfred are the foundation. It is our responsibility to build on that storied past. With this motivation, we will be putting our efforts into the following areas:
01
Main St./W. Univ. St. Corner Gazebo
This timber frame terra cotta roof structure was constructed about 20 years ago at this primary Village street intersection. It includes 7 benches and three bulletin boards. It functioned as a partial shelter for the long range bus service that served Alfred for several years. An upgrade project was carried out on it by a student group. As a timber structure, with little or no finish on it, it became badly weathered. Then, last summer a tree branch fell on it and damaged a prime section of the tile roof. After evaluation, we decided that work to repair and “spruce it up” would be a good first test and practice project to evaluate how to do restorations.
02
The Bandstand On The Village Green
The bandstand on Alfred University property in the center of the Village is also a timber frame structure with a terra cotta roof. The dedication plaque reads: “The Alfred University bandstand was provided for the pleasure of the Alfred Community through the generosity of Thomas W. Ingle ‘60 and JoAnn Kester Ingle ‘60 and was dedicated in September 1998”. It is an impressive structure that has the potential to become a terra cotta showcase that will attract people for special events. It already provides a focus point for the Farmer’s Market and an occasional concert or community event, and was the former site for the Village Band concerts.
03
Terra Cotta House Numbers
A means of putting a touch of terra cotta on every house would be to design, introduce, and install terra cotta house numbers on every home, if the homeowner allows. The numbers would be large enough to be readable from normal street distance, and possibly receive a stain highlight to improve readability. They could be mounted in a standard wooden frame for easy attachment to the home. The design and manufacturing process are still
being determined.

Terra Cotta Benches
Years ago (20?), A21CG and others donated wooden benches that were installed along downtown Mainstreet in the Village of Alfred. In the years since, they too weathered, grew lichen and sustained damage like broken slats. We were able to repair the slats before the student work day, during which the students cleaned and stained them. This greatly improved their appearance, and will last until we are able to replace them with terra cotta benches
